For gerbils, as any other pet, it is important to know the best, easiest way to socialize them, as they will come into contact with people and other animals. Before you decide how to socialize your gerbil you need to know why to socialize your new little friend.

Why to socialize my gerbil?

Do I need to socialize my gerbil? Before we answer this question we must know some basics about how gerbils think and function. Here are some basic gerbil behavioral facts:

Gerbils are more comfortable and feel safest with stability and consistency.
Gerbils are hard wired for safety (since they are preyed upon in the wild); as a result, they are likely to be nervous or fearful of other pets and people.

So now we are ready to ask ourselves who will my gerbil be exposed to in the future: other people or other animals? If the answer is yes to either of these, it will make your gerbil much more comfortable if he or she is accustomed to seeing other people and/or animals sooner rather than later.

Before your gerbil encounters other living creatures, it is easiest if your new friend feels as safe as possible with you. This takes patience and handling your gerbil in a comfortable way for him or her (if you are reading this you are definitely qualified and care).

Instinctually, two male gerbils - if kept in the same cage – may fight and try to compete with one another. If you house a male and female gerbil together, they will mate (and you may end up with more gerbils than you initially anticipate).

Other animals

Gerbils tend to be afraid of other animals as a general rule. When introducing your pet gerbil to other species, make sure it’s a controlled environment that is safe for your gerbil.

Other humans

Introduction of gerbils can be a challenge. It should be a controlled introduction. By controlled we mean consistent noise level and gentle handling (from the gerbil perception). If your gerbil will be introduced to a large group or class, it is best to make a slow introduction but also to make sure everyone in the group knows the most gentle way to handle the gerbil. Although it may take more time initially, in the long run it is very beneficial.
