Gerbils can escape if not properly housed. Do not let your gerbil have free run of your house, as he or she can easily disappear. If you have other pets that may harm your gerbil, keep them in a separate area of room in your home.

Many pet stores offer gerbil caging made from wire or even glass aquariums without a screen. Make sure your gerbil cannot escape from its cage.

Bedding

There is a variety of bedding material for your gerbil that can be found at most pet stores today. Change your gerbil's bedding often to prevent bacterial overgrowth from urine and/or feces. This will keep him/her healthier and reduce the chance of disease.

Here are some examples of acceptable bedding for your gerbil.

  • Hardwood shavings
  • Composite recycled materials
  • Pellets
  • Shredded paper
