Your Pet's Surgery

In my practice, one of the most common questions asked when a ferret needs surgery is, "Is it safe?"

This is a very important question that should be asked. Before it is possible to answer this question, we must clarify and qualify several different aspects of ferret surgeries.

There are four basic aspects of all ferret surgeries, including:

• The Surgeon,
• The Ferret's Health Status,
• The Hospital's Equipment and Procedures, and
• The Hospital's Staff.

Since each of these four aspects will influence the outcome, we must thoroughly understand each one before we can answer the question, "Is it safe?"

There will be many points we talk about here, and they all influence the outcome. It is understandable that some of these points may be more important to you than others, so I suggest you read through this in its entirety, and then use what seems most important to you.

Because ferrets are so unique and different from cats and dogs, they have unique medical needs and diseases that even the best dog and cat veterinarians may not be familiar with, unless they know ferrets well.
