Introducing New Ferrets

When bringing a new ferret into a home with existing ferrets, remember that sometimes it doesn't always work out.

Always let your ferrets pick which ferret they get along with - this lessens the risk of any problems.

When introducing a new ferret, you may want to wash everyone with the same shampoo so there are no new smells to scare/upset anyone.

Allow only supervised play times until everyone gets to know each other well.

Always have a separate cage ready, just in case your ferrets do not get along.

Older ferrets tend to be more possessive of younger ferrets.

When introducing a new ferret, your other ferret(s) will probably try to show dominance (who's in charge).

Keep in mind that ferrets sometimes play rougher than other animals.

Have the new ferret tested for ADV and vaccinated prior to introducing it to your other ferret(s).

It is recommended to have all new ferrets examined by a ferret-knowledgeable veterinarian and checked for ear mites, Aleutian's disease virus, and other transmissible agents prior to introducing them to existing ferrets.
