Heart disease

Heart Disease can be seen at any age, but it is most common in ferrets over 3.5 years of age.

Signs of Heart Disease:

  • Hind leg weakness
  • Anorexia (loss of appetite)
  • Weight loss
  • Labored breathing
  • Lethargic
  • Vomiting
  • Coughing

Radiographs can help detect heart disease. If your ferret is over three years of age, it is best to have him/her checked every six months with an examination and radiographs.

Diagnosis:

We diagnose heart disease with a physical examination and chest radiographs. An echocardiogram can help us to determine what type of heart disease your ferret may have.
