Ferret Health Issues

Eyes:

  • Swollen/bulging eyes
  • Runny or watery eyes
  • White spots
  • Any discharge

Ears

  • Dark wax
  • Scratching, painful (may indicate ear mites)
  • Head tilt (may indicate an ear infection)
  • Blood (may indicate an ear infection/ear mites/excessive scratching)
  • Bad smell (may indicate an ear infection)
  • Any growth (may indicate a mass or tumor)

Mouth

  • Pale gums
  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Grinding teeth
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Panting

Legs

  • Limping
  • Weakness in hindquarters
  • Stiffness
  • Wobbly

Tail

  • Hair loss
  • Growth
  • Kinked
  • Black spots

Nose

  • Runny/discharge
  • Bleeding

Fur and Skin

  • Black spots
  • Hair loss/hair thinning
  • Growths
  • Flaky/dry skin

Lungs

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Trouble breathing or rapid breathing

Stomach

  • Painful
  • Thin
  • Distended
  • Hardened

Urination/Defecation

  • Straining to urinate
  • Crying/vocalizing when urinating/defecating
  • Diarrhea
  • Unable to urinate/defecate
  • Dark/tarry stool
  • Slimy, discolored (often yellow or green) or grainy/birdseedy stool
  • Blood in stool

Reproductive Organs

  • Bleeding
  • Swollen
  • Discharge

Overall Body

  • High temperature
  • Low temperature

  • Convulsions/comatose

Behavior

  • Lethargic
