Rhinoscopy

What is Rhinoscopy?

Rhinoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves looking into the nasal cavity with fiber optic scopes. It is an excellent way to get a diagnosis in cases of acute or chronic nasal problems in dogs and cats.

How can you diagnose the cause of nasal disease without rhinoscopy?

Other procedures involve doing nasal x-rays or a MRI. The big benefit of rhinoscopy is we can look into the nasal cavity to see the problem and then remove any foreign body or take biopsies or cultures as needed. The other procedures do not allow us to get samples to be cultured or examined microscopically.

When might rhinoscopy benefit a dog or cat?

Dogs or cats with the following symptoms can be diagnosed with rhinoscopy:

  • Acute nasal discharge with bleeding
  • Chronic nasal congestion or discharge

Does rhinoscopy require anesthesia?

Although rhinoscopy does require anesthesia, we feel in a controlled environment with all of the monitors and ventilator, this is very safe for most patients. The major benefits of the procedure usually outweigh the risks associated with the anesthesia.
