Video Endoscopy

What is video endoscopy and why is it important?

Video endoscopy can offer tremendous benefits to our dog and cat patients. Without endoscopy to establish a diagnosis, any patient with acute or chronic GI (click able box with the following definition: chronic vomiting/chronic diarrhea/vomit w/ blood/blood in stool/chronic weight loss) symptoms is very difficult to diagnose. With intestinal disease, it is very important to establish an accurate diagnosis so the treatment plan is the best possible one for the patient. In addition, some of the chronic diseases of inflammation in the intestinal tract can lead to cancer in a percentage of patients. Video endoscopy involves the use of a fiber optic scope to look into the stomach, intestines and colon to obtain biopsies and look for the cause of the symptoms. This is a very effective and minimally invasive procedure that has a high yield for a diagnosis in intestinal disease.

Does the video endoscopy in animals require anesthesia?

Yes, anesthesia is required so the patient is absolutely still and to get the best results with the least amount of discomfort for the pet. Although it does require anesthesia, we use some of the newest, safest anesthetics available today.

If your dog or cat has any of the following symptoms he/she may be a candidate for video endoscopy:
